“If you want to be treated like a mother, act like one.” ― Jeannette Walls
Today is Mother’s Day. This brings to mind the two most incredible mothers the world has ever known and who inspire me and who have inspired millions of others. These two mothers lived almost two thousand years apart and one wasn’t really a mother in the sense of actually giving birth to a baby. The first is Mary, the mother of Jesus who said, when told of her role in the changing of the universe, “Let it be with me according to Thy word.” There can be no more powerful or awesome response to a call from God than those words. She lived her life from that moment on exactly as she promised she would. The other mother is Mother Teresa who was a mother to thousands of hungry and hurting souls. She shouldered an incredible burden and then lived her life also answering the call of God in spite of the obstacles life and her own church placed before her. With those two as role models, no mother could ever fail to please God if she tried to emulate either of them. Even to be only partially successful at living up to their standards for any mother would put her so far above others as to inspire and elevate her own children (or those she chose to love and tend) and all who know her. Over time, there have been many mothers who have lived up the high standards set by those two, and there will be many, many more. It’s not only women, of course, who can be inspired and changed by Mary and Mother Teresa—anyone with a caring heart and loving spirit can be like them in their dedication to God and His service, man or woman.
