“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ― Nelson Mandela
School is back in session once more. The morning kids don't get their ujii (hot porridge) until 9:00 A.M., so that's when we start the school day. However, the kids have been showing up at the gate at 8:00 A.M. every day and we can't stand to see them standing and waiting, so we moved up the starting time up to 8:00 A.M. You guessed it, now they start showing up at 7:00 A.M., but we can't keep opening earlier and earlier and will stick to the eight o'clock time. It is such an inspirational sight to see all the kids anxious to get in to start the school day. I just don't remember ever being that eager to get to school, but these kids know the power of education--not to mention that school here is a lot of fun and they get fed. They also get love, attention, and recognition for their work which is something we all could use in large quantities. We have thirty-five kids every morning (twenty for the afternoon English classes) and could have as many as 200 if we had the facilities. What a joy to be able to give what is so sorely needed and so enthusiastically enjoyed.
