Quote of the Day: "The Bible is ... as necessary to spiritual life as breath is to natural life. There is nothing more essential to our lives than the Word of God.". -- Jack Hayford
Well, we've certainly been getting the Word out. We bought 42 new Bibles in Swahili two weeks ago and have already distributed 22 of them. The names won't mean much to you because you cannot find them on any maps you have, but we have given two new Bibles to the new pastor at Muramba, eight to Festo at Kerukekele, ten to the circuit at Mwibara, six to the church at Bukore (right in the Serengeti), one to Neeone, and five to the church at St. Wiggins in Lamadi. The rest will be gone in a matter of weeks, and so it goes. We have distributed over 500 Swahili Bibles since we got here and will be giving them away as long as there is money to buy more. We have over 4,000 members (not all can read), but as of now, there is one Bible for every eight members. We don't count the children as members, but they outnumber the adults in almost every church, so we can use many, many more Bibles. When I was making mission trips to the Amazon, we distributed over 1,000 Bibles in Spanish to the villagers up and down the river. I will never forget the looks on the faces of Christians who got their very own Bible in a language they could read for the first time. It's a mixture of happiness and awe that is indescribable. My son, John, smuggled two Bibles in Russian, to a family in St. Petersburg back when the Soviet Union still banned them. They hid them under the floor as if they were gold. The Word is powerful, but it needs to be in the hands of believers. We are doing our part, small as it is.
