Quote of the Day: “Ninety per cent of all malaria cases are in sub-Saharan Africa (Tanzania, i.e.) where it is the main cause of death and a major threat to child health.” ― BBC World Health Report
Juliana came back to work today after missing three days with malaria. Edina and Amos still have it. The rainy season always brings a spike in cases because of all the standing water everywhere. While we live in the Beverly Hills area of Bunda (up where the winds blow mosquitos away), most of Bunda, including our staff live down where the wind cannot reach. The doctors said almost 80% of Bunda's malaria comes from the area where we used to live. While we lived there (our first six months here), Karen and I both had multiple cases of malaria. Karen has had none since we moved up here and John never lived at the other spot and has never had malaria, so there must be something to that old real estate maxim of "location, location, location!" It is also true that Karen and I had multiple cases of malaria while we were taking anti-malaria medication, so that spot out of the wind was doubly lethal. While it generally doesn't kill healthy young people and adults, it sure makes you want to die when you have it, and it does kill many, many young children, pregnant mothers, people with AIDS, and others who have something else wrong at the time. In the almost eight years we have lived here, fourteen children have died just in our neighborhood--and we live where the wind is strong! Pray for those working on eradicating this terrible disease that seems to single out the very ones that Christ told us to watch over.
