Quote of the Day: Elihu Ni Uhuru Education Is Freedom
Karen finished making the uniforms she designed to honor her late friend, Caryn Pierce, and the students of Santa Caryn Academy. She made the uniforms to reflect the traditional dress of the Tanzanians and the parents and students loved it. I mean they LOVED it! It was a lot of work, but wow, to see the result and the smiles on the faces of the children and parents made it all worthwhile. For these children, these are the best clothes they have ever owned or worn. They are orphans for the most part living with extended family members. Those not orphans are very poor because all were dressed in rags before they got the uniforms. Soon, I will post a website where you can see each student individually, but for now there is a group shot at right. Clicking on that picture will take you to individual pictures of the male and female uniforms plus one of Karen and a rare sighting of the Mzungo Masaai. Check them out. It is usually very hard to get Tanzanians to smile for photos but not today. We were all happy. I'm sure the school will have several new students once they see the uniforms, so Karen has to keep the sewing machine oiled. What a wonderful woman and what a wonderful memorial to her good friend taken from us all too soon, Caryn Pierce.
