Quote of the Day: "A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."
- Donna Roberts
When Karen was teaching in Arkansas, she had a good friend who taught music named Caryn Pierce--who loved all things Barbie Pink. She had a pink car and just about everything was pink. When we first went back to the U.S. in 2008, Karen went to visit Caryn and both had a good time. The last time we went back in 2011, Caryn had been diagnosed with cancer, fought hard, but it overwhelmed her and she had died just days before we got there. My Karen was able to attend her funeral and was very, very sad at the loss of such a young, vibrant woman who brought so much to teaching. The pre-school at the Methodist Church here is having my Karen help them design their uniforms and Karen went with a traditional African look (not the British look which is so prevalent here), and when they needed a name for the new pre-school, my Karen told them about her friend, Caryn, and they wanted the school to be named in memory of Caryn Pierce. The name of the new school is Santa Caryn Pierce Academy which will keep Caryn's name and excitement of teaching alive here in Africa. Santa Caryn means St. Caryn in Swahili, so she is now a saint--here at least--already a saint in many children's hearts. Her picture is at right (in pink, of course) and if you click on it you will see the students of Santa Caryn Pierce Academy. She was a bright spot in education in Northwest Arkansas and will continue to shine here in East Africa.
